We Never Get Our Wires Crossed

Every machine has its history. That's why we at Hässlers believe that old-fashioned technology doesn't belong on the scrap heap - quite the opposite! Many of these machines have something that modern ones will never have: a soul. One such treasure is our Brehmer Leipzig corner clamping machine from the 1950s. A true veteran, it turns cardboard into striking, design-friendly packaging that feels anything but outdated - it still catches the eye today.

The principle of working with corner clamping is simple:
The cardboard is cut and punched. Then the graphic elements are applied - screen printing, foiling or embossing. Finally, the box is clamped to its final shape using wire at the corners. And that's it! Setting up the "Brehmer", as we call it, takes just a few minutes, a characteristic of old one-sided machines. At first glance, it may seem like a rough process, but combined with modern, high-quality materials and bold design, it creates unique packaging that stands out on any shelf.

Behind our 'Brehmer' is the life story of engineer Hugo Brehmer. Born in Lübeck, Germany, in 1844, Brehmer emigrated to the United States in 1870. There, under the guidance of inventor Henry R. Heyl, he devised a method of using wire to staple boxes and developed the first industrial machines to do this. He secured the European rights to his invention and in 1879 founded the Brehmer Brothers company in Leipzig with his brother. The company quickly became an icon of the bookbinding industry, thanks to their other innovations, including the V8 bookbinding machine - another gem that we are proud of in our workshop.

The success of corner-glued packaging is based on careful craftsmanship and premium materials. For example, through-coloured or deep black Eska paperboard with thicknesses from 1.5 mm. With its smooth surface and refined shades of GA cardboard, Japanese Takeo paper adds an extra touch of elegance. The paperboard is punched or milled for exceptionally sharp lines. The magic ingredient then lies in the execution of the layout: deep foil stamping, striking colour tones or holographic foils can elevate even a simple box to a premium level. Screen printing is another versatile option that allows for endless creative possibilities.

We've used corner stapling for luxury perfume packaging for Beviro, premium liquor packaging for Ahus and customised garment packaging for Stockholm's WeSC. The mix of tradition, modern design and craftsmanship creates unique products every time. So what can we clutch for you?

We look forward to creating corner-locked packaging with character, style and history - customised just for you.
